Background
A splendid hybrid of trap and orchestral, Epochal brings to life a complex relationship between harmony and groove. The piece utilizes a downward chromatic bassline to explore many harmonically interesting chords, ultimately preparing a dominant cadence with V/V. The mix of acoustic instruments and synthetic trap percussion is a style currently seeing a rise in use among film scores. Both of these timbres have room to shine, with the lovely piano riffs flitting atop the slick ebb and flow of the beat. A cavalcade of brass stabs erupt at the drop, imparting new excitement unto the recitation of Epochal’s main theme. There’s a lot to unpack in this trap piece, but it culls the crowds nonetheless despite its level of complexity atypical to the genre.
