Exodus

Background

Exodus, is an ambitious piece of grandiose scale. The pieces opens with a juxtaposition between the delicate playing of high register strings and their bold harmonic movement of i6  -♭II. The apprehension of the instruments seems mismatched with the harmonic distance they’re covering, and the air is rife with ambiguity. The brass comes in to support the entrance of the main motifs in a passage reminiscent of fanfare. After the motifs have been established, the icy high strings return more foreboding than ambiguous above the strong bed of brass. Reaching a firm dominant harmony, the entire orchestra swells to begin the main theme on a deceptive cadence.
This piece contains a lot of very special moments, and traverses a huge spectrum of emotions. Different timbres are highlighted in different sections, giving all members of the orchestra both time to shine and time to rest. From the cracking bells of a fortissimo brass ensemble to the soft doubling of a flute and glockenspiel over lush strings, Exodus lives true to its name, taking the listener and performers on a journey that is sure to excite.
